Day 1

Answer: B. Germany. Advent Calendars had an unlikely start in the 1800s with chalk marks made on the outside of houses to count down the days before Christmas, then this developed into homemade paper calendars and finally ended up with the current day ones though ones that had chocolate didn’t appear until the 1950s.

Answer: A. An effigy of the devil. The burning of the effigy is to cleanse people's homes and towns before Christmas Day.

Answer: C. Japan. It is based on the fried chicken meal that the Japanese used to eat before a successful marketing campaign by KFC in the 1970s encouraged everyone to eat KFC.

Answer: C. Sweden. This is my favourite question; the Yule Goat is around 42 feet high and 23 feet wide and weighs about 3.6 tons and has its own live stream for the Swedes to watch.

Answer: A. Austria. But Krampus can also be found in Germany, Slovenia and Hungary. And Krampus is a hairy creature with fangs who punishes naughtly children.

Answer: B. Candles. On Christmas Eve, cemeteries are turned into a magical, candle lit and peaceful place for families to remember their loved ones.

Answer: A. Loksa is a pudding and if it sticks, it means that the next year will be a good one, if it doesn't stick, it'll be bad. There are many different recipes online for Loksa and please get the home owner's permission before you start throwing sticky puddings at their ceiling.

Question: In Germany, a film called Dinner for One is shown each year. The film features actors from which country?

Answer: C. Radish. Radishes are grown to a large size and are carved into scenes from the Nativity, animals, Mayan images and buildings especially for the festival on 23rd December.

Answer: C. 163. Although there are many countries that have some of the customs but don't have the day off.
Day 11
Question: Which country eats Johnny Cake as part of the Christmas celebrations?

Answer: A. Bahamas. It’s a type of cornmeal flat bread which dates as far back as the 1600s and which the American Indians introduced to the settlers.
Day 12
Question: In which country is Christmas Day known as Bin Day?
- Bangladesh
- India
- Pakistan
Answer: A. Bangladesh. And it means Big Day. Christmas is a one day holiday and is celebrated with preeti bhoj which includes pulau, korma, fish and vegetable curries with pitha, biscuits and cake.
